Francis Poulenc & Friends - EMI Classics

Thanks to EMI Classics for making possible a revival of these vivid pictures from the past, especially those of Poulenc and Février in the Concerto for 2 Pianos! Even though some of the images are on YouTube, the complete version of this DVD really is a must.

Dialogues des carmélites - Marthe Keller - Jan Latham-Koenig - Arthaus Musik - 2000

Marthe Keller's fantastic production for the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg (perhaps the most beautiful ever of the Dialogues), perfect direction (by Jan Latham-Koenig, a great lover of Poulenc) and the excellent stage design mean that this DVD is a must-have!

Dialogues des carmélites - Riccardo Muti - Robert Carsen - TDK UK - 2012

The pronunciation of Bernanos' text here sometimes makes one aware of the non-French cast, but what energy, what reverence! Robert Carsen's astonishing production exudes intelligence and is teeming with symbolism.

Regine Crespin chante Poulenc, Berlioz, Schumann, Schubert - EMI Classics

Crespin, a great collaborator of Poulenc's, sings a few of the mélodies in this DVD, of which one of the bonus sections has filmed performances of Duval accompanied by Poulenc in 1959 and 1961.

La Voix humaine - Denise Duval - Dir. Dominique Delouche - Doriane Films - 2009

In Dominique Delouche's 1970 film version we can marvel at the wonderful acting skills of Denise Duval, who created this role in 1959.
Thirty years later, she went on to give an amazing master class, which is also included on this invaluable DVD.

Dialogues des carmélites - Kent Nagano - Dmitri Tcherniakov - Bel Air Classique - 2011

Dmitri Tcherniakov loses the plot in this production. Bernanos and Poulenc's spirit is totally derailed. The Carmélites are portrayed as members of a strange sect; the final scene shows a collective suicide with Blanche saving the other sisters from a gas explosion. Moreover, Susan Gritton is not the most unforgettable Blanche de la Force. To be avoided by lovers of the work

La Voix humaine - Felicity Lott (soprano), Graham Johnson (piano) - Champs Hill Records - 2011

A studio recording with a 1930s-inspired set. The remarkable rapport between Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson results in an intimate and unpretentious performance of  the piece in the arrangement for piano, of which Poulenc was very fond and which he performed frequently with Denise Duval.
